• Most students can learn higher mental processes if these processes are made central to instruction
• Intelligence is made up of learnable skills
• Cooperative learning with high standards and goals can significantly improve the success rate of high-risk students
• The higher the quality of instruction, the less relevant to achievement are a student’s entering abilities
• Although some faculty believe that some students simply lack the intellectual equipment to learn, understanding the background and developmental and contextual reasons why students behave as they do can greatly enhance our ability to help them develop.
