Get and Use Feedback
All teachers use their own methods to get feedback from their students. Listed below are some more ideas on getting and using feedback to know the pulse of your class:
- Increase your eye contact with students
- Ask questions during lecture
- Ask if they understand what you are saying
- Call on students to paraphrase or to summarize
- Begin your lecture with a series of questions
- Give students problems to solve during class time
- Give frequent assignments and quizzes
- Schedule an oral quiz with each student
- Schedule individual appointments with students
- Assign “minute papers” at the end of class
- Reserve the last 10 minutes of class for questions
- Use index cards and short questionnaires to get feedback
- Ask students to define, associate or apply concepts
- Use a question box to solicit comments or problems
- Periodically borrow students’ lecture notes
- Install a telephone “hotline”
- Attend or lead lab or discussion sections yourself
- Have students turn in their lecture notes
- Have students send you a telegram evaluation
- Videotape your class
- Respond visibly to student suggestions and criticisms
